Project Proposal:
Fold is a unique newspaper that provides insightful and accessible content about the complex art world.
The goal of Fold is to offer a platform that celebrates and appreciates various aspects of art, broken down into sections—process, history, contemporary work, etc. It’s an art education for anyone. Approachable and digestible writing styles, affordability of subscription, and community inclusion are the pillars of our mission. This supports both established and aspiring artists alike.
The target audience is urban and suburban individuals ages 25–50. Fold will be available for subscription or to be picked up at a local news stand. Each edition will focus on a different artistic sub sector, providing diverse and engaging content. To sustain the newspaper, funds will rely on subscriptions and paper sales, as well as offering advertising space for artists seeking work and welcoming art patron donations. By combining these resources, Fold will make the study of art accessible to all, as it is built upon the principal that art enriches life.
Publication Spreads
Art taps into the mysterious. It is undefined. It plays with reality, perception, intuition. This is very unfamiliar terrain for most of us, and so it can deepen our discomfort, and cause us to steer away from art. There are a lot of terms people like to throw around. Perhaps it makes them feel like they are part of something. Terms can be useful for quick relaying of meaning. But I find their exclusionary qualities more damaging than helpful. Education and inclusivity are the goal. They are how we can translate all that knowledge into something real, something meaningful.
Web Design
Mailers and Poly Bags
The newspapers by nature are not precious. Read them, keep them, trash them, use them as kindling—whatever you want. However, if Fold is something you’d like to hang onto and collect, the mailers are contracted with a sturdy spine and protective feel that will fit nicely on your bookshelf, coffee table, etc.
Each Mailer includes a brief synopsis of the edition enclosed, and a note from the editor thanking you for your interest and care. Custom rubber bands hold the paper snug in place, so no shifting, creasing, or hurt edges—the wear and tear is your job after all.
Poster Designs
Illustrative Drop Cap Alphabet (Process)
My senior project is an art focused newspaper, so I was eager to design a set of decorative initials to mark the start of each article. The illustrations will be abstract and focused on creative and unique approaches to letter forms. Letters will be presented in color and black and white. I intend to start with an analog process—sketching, tracing, refining—and then moving on to digitized and refined finals. I want these forms to have an elegant combination classical restraint partnered with energetic experimentation. The letters should be cohesive and familial, but unique in their own organic qualities. I will present the alphabet in a final poster format and with example images of how they are used in my senior project.
